Kern's base vocabulary is built on Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory — the idea that all languages share a small set of irreducible semantic primes from which all meaning can be composed.

NSM was developed by Anna Wierzbicka and Cliff Goddard over four decades of cross-linguistic research. The 64 semantic primes used here are drawn from their work. See: Goddard & Wierzbicka (2014), Words and Meanings; Wierzbicka (1996), Semantics: Primes and Universals.
